Geraldo Rivera weighs Senate run on Twitter

Television personality and failed Al Capone treasure hunter Geraldo Rivera announced Thursday that he is considering a run for U.S. Senate in his home state of New Jersey.

During a segment on his talk radio show, the Fox News contributor said he was “truly contemplating” running in the 2014 race against either Newark Mayor Cory Booker or senior U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who has held the seat twice since 1982. At 89 years old, the World War II veteran is currently the oldest senator.

Any suggestion that Rivera was simply daydreaming out loud on air was quickly refuted when he took to Twitter to ask what his followers thought.

“Wondering how folks feel about me running in N.J. under GOP banner against either Lautenberg or Booker for U.S. Senate?,” he wrote.

Unfortunately for Rivera, if he was hoping to make a huge splash on Twitter with the news, it was more like a belly flop. His followers weren’t helping out: The message was only retweeted a handful of times, but it did get some responses. Most were encouraging, while others sounded worried.

“I may have to move there just to vote for you, GR,” wrote Jane Wells.

“You’re not Benghazi crazy enough,” wrote Frank Brinsley.

@AmericanElephant was more blunt: “Please God, no.”

So, what do you think? Will Rivera throw his hat in the ring? Or is he just trying to make waves on Twitter?
