You may have noticed that a lot of white people are covering Beyoncé’s “Formation”—and the Internet is not amused.
Acoustic (or, even worse, ukulele) covers of R&B and hip-hop songs have been around since the dawn of YouTube. But to deemphasize the political valence of a track steeped in black culture like “Formation” is basically a travesty. In an alternate universe where the Beyhive is an actual, physical thing, the musicians doing this would likely be exiled for life.However, something good has come from all this: #TrapCovers. Twitter users are turning classic, softer, whiter songs, into, well, trap bangers. Like this one, which is so well done that I kind of wish “Bohemian Rhapsody” was actually written by Future instead of Queen:
Or this take on the white classic “Hey Jude.”Or this loving homage to immortal white pop star Britney Spears.Or this tribute to Adele (also white).And let’s not forget DMX, who gave us this proto-#TrapCovers banger.But it just keeps going:
